HMRC Overview

HMRC stands for Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs. It is a civil service department in the UK which was established by way of an Act of Parliament in 2005. It was formed by bringing together Inland Revenue and Her Majesty’s Customs and Excise. The work of HMRC is to collect taxes from the citizens and regulate their income. It deals with inheritance tax, corporation tax, environmental tax, indirect tax, income tax and capital gain tax. It also takes the monies and appropriates them to services around the country.

The agency also helps families and businesses by providing financial support through tax credits. It is solely responsible for streamlining the taxation process and ensuring that the money gathered is used for Public Works. HMRC has its headquarters at 100 parliament street, Whitehall, London.

There is not one single HMRC phone number for all services. You may need the HMRC VAT helpline, or child tax credit information for instance. Someone else may need to learn about their pension benefits. Given the wide range of services that this non-ministerial department handles, it is essential to have separate numbers for each section.

You can call the tax credit HMRC helpline at 0300 200 3909. But, alternatively, if you are calling for Income Tax related issues, you should dial 0300 200 3319. You can call on these numbers between 8am to 8pm from Monday to Friday and between 8am to 4pm on Saturdays. The lines are closed on Sundays and public holidays.

  • Your automated response to my difficulties in paying the self assessment tax bill was MOST UNHELPFUL. ALL OF THE DETAILS CONCERNING MY CREDIT CARD HAD BEEN CHECKED NUMEROUS TIMES AND THE BANK VERIFIED THE AVAILABILITY OF FUNDS.
The fault was clearly at your end which you are not admitting. To keep sending automated responses saying the same thing is most irritating. We wasted all of yesterday visiting the bank, making phone calls which remained on hold and trying to pay our account on line.
Today, we telephoned directly and were finally able to pay by telephone.

The whole experience was a shambles and needs improving for the future.
An apology for causing such inconvenience would be more appropriate.

  • Hey, you’re the goto exprte. Thanks for hanging out here.
